Why did you decide to embark on a career in IT and become a Business Manager?
My journey into IT was quite unexpected. After completing my degree in management, I wasn’t familiar with the role of a Business Manager. However, as I went through various recruitment phases, I gained a better understanding of the BM position. My path has been a true roller coaster ride, filled with initial challenges where I had to put in a lot of hard work without immediate business results for the first nine months. Despite that, I remained dedicated and motivated to achieve substantial growth. Since then, it has been an upward trajectory, working with a team of consultants whom I deeply appreciate and who contribute to my daily growth.
What does it mean to be a Business Manager at InnoTech, including roles, responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities for those pursuing this career?
A Business Manager is essentially a manager of a micro-enterprise within a consultancy firm. Our responsibilities encompass three main areas: Commercial, Recruitment, and Management. On the commercial front, we engage in prospecting for new clients and partners. In terms of recruitment, we ensure that we bring in the right people for InnoTech and our projects. As for management, we oversee our team of consultants and partnerships, ensuring their happiness and motivation in the projects they are involved in. Currently, as a Senior Unit Manager, in addition to the responsibilities of a Business Manager, I also manage and train a team of managers and junior managers to help them grow and achieve their desired outcomes.
The main challenges of this role undoubtedly include the initially somewhat routine work that is fundamental to gaining a deep understanding of the diverse business specificities. It also involves interacting with individuals who have different expectations and motivations, which can quickly change in terms of the direction they want to take in their careers. Additionally, there is the misconception that working hard automatically leads to more business, whereas in reality, working smart and strategically is key to achieving long-term success. This career offers tremendous growth opportunities within a short span of time. At InnoTech, one can earn salaries that are often unattainable in most Portuguese companies with only 2-3 years of work experience, along with other benefits such as a company car. Above all, this role teaches us how to manage all aspects of a business, which I consider crucial after completing my master’s degree in management.
What do you typically do throughout the day, and with whom do you interact? What do you enjoy most about your Business Manager role?
At the start of my day, I turn on my computer and review all the emails that have arrived since the previous evening, as well as respond to messages on LinkedIn and Teams. Throughout the day, I have frequent conversations with my team of consultants to understand if they require any support. I also communicate with my clients to explore new opportunities and ensure that everything is running smoothly in ongoing projects. I provide guidance to junior team members in prospecting meetings, the formulation of pre-proposals, and the development of commercial strategies. I conduct interviews with prospective talents and engage in prospecting activities to find new clients and partners. What I enjoy most about this role is connecting with people and helping talents who feel lost in the job market find the right projects for them.
In this digital world where remote work is prevalent, what is the secret to maintaining a team spirit and living the company culture? What makes a high-performing team?
I believe the key to maintaining a team spirit and embracing the company culture lies in in-person work. Although we have a policy of one remote work day per week, the spirit of creativity, freedom, fun, and family is truly felt when we are physically present in the office. InnoTech’s culture is the main differentiating factor in the market we operate in. I can confidently say that if I were not at InnoTech, I wouldn’t be in the consulting industry.
What does it take to be a successful Business Manager, in terms of soft skills and advice for newcomers, as well as tips and best practices for experienced Business Managers aiming to excel further?
A Business Manager only needs four things: a desire to grow, a passion for communication, persistence, and a strong psychological aspect. For someone starting out, I would say that in the initial phase, it will be a demanding profession, and there may be moments when you feel like giving up. However, once you overcome this initial phase, it becomes a profession that is easy to enjoy and become passionate about. The most important thing I have learned as a Business Manager is that when we reach out to potential partners, we are not bothering or engaging in hard-selling tactics. We are not inferior to our partners just because we aim to establish new connections. Above all, these connections are win-win for both parties, and we should always approach our partners as equals.
For those already in the role of Business Manager, my advice is to continuously nurture the four key factors mentioned earlier. Additionally, it is crucial to listen actively and empathetically, as these qualities foster stronger relationships. Building a network and maintaining a positive attitude even in the face of challenges are also essential aspects of excelling in this role.

InnoTech allows me to manage my personal and professional life effectively, enabling me to disconnect from work when necessary. Outside of work, I enjoy going to the cinema, playing sports, and watching football.
