#InsideInnoTechers with Pedro Barroca

Converting real-world problems into the machine-understandable language

At InnoTech, we are much more than “screens”. What’s behind the faces you usually interact with on conference calls? Today, we invite you to meet Pedro Barroca, Software Developer and passionate about converting real-world problems into machine-understandable language. Pedro was a karate practitioner and is used to the toughest battles. Now he is addressing our customers’ also very exciting challenges. Empowering, innovating, and re-imagining technology with them.

Why did you choose InnoTech to evolve your career?

I chose InnoTech to evolve my career because it allowed me to continue developing my interest in the latest technologies. What it offered me was an opportunity to refresh my work environment, with a new team, a great project and an exciting challenge. Another factor for this decision was the energy that I felt during the interviews. There was an awesome spirit of mutual help in which I felt everyone’s availability to a joint evolution in all aspects.

How do you describe yourself? What personal qualities do you highlight?

I see myself as a person who loves to help others overcome their challenges. I face all the challenges as a puzzle and piece by piece we, as a team, manage to overcome all our difficulties. My main qualities are that I’m persistent, persevering and willing to learn new things. Due to these personality traits, I’m able to do a little bit of everything as a real Portuguese can.

As a recent InnoTecher, what’s your opinion about the onboarding process? And the work environment you found at InnoTech?

During the onboarding process, I had the opportunity to meet several people from the organization, I had 2 or 3 interviews with the Business Manager, the CEO and the tech team which made me feel a great availability to help me overcome any potential difficulty. I started working during the Covid-19 pandemic situation that implies working from home, but when I went to the InnoTech office it was very funny, I had the opportunity to meet almost everyone in the company and they all have great energy and youthful spirit, essential for the greyest days like the ones we are going through.

What is your role, what do you do in practice and what are your main skills?

I work as a software developer, saying this I write the code to make computers do what we want them to do. I would like to highlight my ability to convert real-world problems into machine-understandable language, which translates into pieces of technology to help with our day-to-day tasks and challenges.

What do you like the most in your job and as an InnoTecher? How do you see yourself in a few years?

For me, InnoTech is, as the name says, innovation + technology and these are two of the main motivations of my passion. Knowing how things work and being part of the team that develops our future drives me in my daily life. In a few years, I find myself working with the same attitude and determination as today, using technology to help people in their daily needs and already with some products on the market achieving this.

In what project are you involved? Tell us a little bit about it.

I’m working with the team responsible for the search component of the Worten world. What we do is make sure that people find what they’re looking for, even if their searches contain typos or misspellings. To do this and ensure that everything works even on the most demanding shopping days, like Black Friday, we have a distributed architecture that can be scaled horizontally and we use one of my favorite programming languages, Go.

Where do you live? What do you like to do in your free time? Is there any (secret 😊) curiosity and fun facts about yourself? Let the world know 😉

I’m from Montijo, a place that has been talked about a lot because of the new airport. Montijo is on the south side of the Tejo River and here you can benefit from the proximity of a large city like Lisbon with the tranquility of a medium-sized city. We have all the amenities and traffic is almost non-existent compared to Lisbon.

I like to spend time with friends and family, making dinners to update all of our new achievements and playing sports like football or tennis. My other hobbies are learning new things and experimenting with new technologies, creating tools to improve society as a whole. I co-founded a startup that aims to improve people’s lives using AI, https://plicca.com. I built a game, Trivia Together, during the first few months of lockdown to improve people’s interaction while maintaining social distance. I co-founded a new project, also during the lockdown, whose mission is to help the hotels, restaurants, bars, etc, in these difficult times, with an innovative application that offers a digital menu and other cool features, https://aelsa.app.

Usually, I don’t keep secrets to myself and I’m a very calm guy. I think that due to my 10 years of experience in Shotokan Karate, I have strong personality traits based on its 5 commandments: perfect your character, respect others, be faithful, avoid violent behavior and cultivate the sport of perseverance.
